Wallpaper - A Fragile Escape

Created by artist Kate Jarvik Birch, our A Fragile Escape wallpaper brings a striking painterly narrative to the wall. The design portrays two vivid monarch butterflies poised within the warm, shadowed perspective of an open box. Painted in rich terracotta oranges, deep espresso browns, and warm cardboard tones, the composition plays with depth, light, and delicate wing details outlined in crisp black and white. Produced as made-to-measure mural wallpapers on PVC-free paper with a subtle surface texture, this expressive artwork transforms an accent wall into an engaging visual story.

In the room

Because of its distinctive three-dimensional perspective and focal motif, we see this wall mural working particularly well on an uninterrupted feature wall where the composition can unfold without heavy obstruction. In a living room, positioning the wallpaper behind a low sofa or credenza allows the upper butterfly and open perspective to draw the eye upward. In a study or home office, the warm earth tones create an inviting, contemplative background. The design also makes a memorable impression in a hallway or entryway, offering an immediate sense of depth as you enter the space.

Styling it

To let the graphic presence of the butterflies stand out, we suggest keeping surrounding furniture relatively simple and grounded. Mid-century or contemporary silhouettes in warm walnut, teak, or painted matte black echo the dark shadows and box contours within the motif.

Upholstery and textiles in textured natural weaves, like oatmeal bouclé or unbleached canvas, complement the craft-like feel of the painted cardboard backdrop without competing for attention. Matte black architectural lighting or warm brass accents can highlight the vivid orange tones during the evening.

Colour combinations

The palette of our wallpaper is anchored by radiant monarch orange, deep charred brown, soft tan, and delicate accents of white dotting along the wing margins.

When choosing colors for adjoining walls, woodwork, or built-in elements, warm neutrals like toasted taupe, pale sand, or creamy ecru provide a calm transition. For a moodier and more enveloping interior, deep espresso brown or warm charcoal on adjacent walls can extend the shadowed depth of the box perspective throughout the entire room.
