Wallpaper - Basking In The Light

Created by Kate Jarvik Birch, our Basking In The Light wallpaper captures a painted scene of a tabby cat resting across a sharp beam of sunlight on a cool slate-blue floor. The strong diagonal band of warm golden-yellow light cuts across deep navy, teal, and slate tones, creating an expressive contrast between deep shadow and radiant warmth. Brushwork details in the cat's calico and tabby coat add intimate visual character, while the clean geometric angle of the window pane shadow gives the composition modern graphic structure. Our wallpapers are made-to-measure according to your wall dimensions and printed on PVC-free paper with a subtle physical structure.

In the room

Because the composition relies on a strong diagonal beam of light and a large area of deep tonal grounding, we love this design on an accent wall where the motif can stretch out cleanly. In a living room or bedroom, placing this wall mural on an uninterrupted wall allows the full diagonal shadow and sunbeam to draw the eye naturally across the space. It also works wonderfully in a cozy reading nook, study, or hallway where the painterly scene brings an inviting, peaceful character to the room.

Styling it

To balance the strong contrast in this design, we recommend styling with warm wood furniture, such as honey oak, walnut, or teak, which picks up on the golden yellow of the sunlit patch. Keeping surrounding decor relatively grounded with soft, unpatterned textiles and simple silhouette seating lets the illustrative quality of the mural wallpapers remain the visual centerpiece. Subtle matte black or dark charcoal accents in lighting fixtures or frames will also tie back cleanly into the deep shadows of the artwork.

Color combinations

The wallpaper is defined by deep navy, muted teal, slate blue, and rich charcoal, illuminated by vibrant sunshine yellow and warm ochre accents on the cat's coat. For surrounding walls and trim, warm off-whites, soft creams, or muted sand tones prevent the room from feeling too dark while reflecting the warm sunlight in the print. If you prefer a richer, more enveloping feel, pairing the design with a deep navy or dark petrol blue on adjacent walls will create a dramatic, cohesive interior.
