Wallpaper - Lights Up

Our Lights Up wallpaper, created by Kate Jarvik Birch, captures an atmospheric city intersection illuminated by evening traffic and glowing streetlamps after rain. The design brings together cool twilight blues and slate tones on the wet asphalt, contrasted by painterly reflections of amber headlights, red brake lights, and warm storefront windows. Expressive brushwork and blurred points of light give the street scene a distinct gouache-inspired artistic character. Made-to-measure on PVC-free paper with a subtle physical surface structure, this wallpaper brings an evocative urban perspective into the home.

In the room

We see this design working especially well in a living room, dining room, or a private home office where you want an expressive, mood-setting focal point. Because the composition features rich horizontal perspective and distinct light reflections across the lower foreground, giving it a wider uninterrupted wall lets the full streetscape unfold naturally. In an entryway or hallway, the deep blue tones can create an inviting sense of depth as you transition between spaces. Under warmer evening lighting, the yellow and coral light reflections on the wet street become particularly vibrant against the surrounding cool tones.

Styling it

To let the artwork remain the focal point of the room, we would surround it with relatively quiet, grounded furnishings. Mid-century modern or contemporary silhouettes in warm walnut or dark-stained wood complement the architectural elements in the scene while echoing its deeper tones.

For surrounding accents, matte black metal fixtures and textured dark upholstery provide strong structural balance against the painterly reflections, avoiding unnecessary visual clutter around the mural.

Color combinations

The palette in our wallpaper revolves around deep twilight blues, cool slates, and muted petrol tones, punctuated by glowing amber, warm yellow, coral red, and soft teal.

To create a cohesive scheme, consider pairing this design with:

• Deep navy, slate blue, or charcoal on adjacent walls or trim for an enveloping, cohesive atmosphere
• Warm off-white or soft greige to provide a clean, gallery-like contrast that emphasizes the glow of the streetlights
• Rich terracotta, rust, or ochre in accent cushions, throws, or ceramics to pick up the warm light reflecting on the pavement
