Wallpaper - Conoid Grain, Payne's Grey

Our Conoid Grain, Payne's Grey wallpaper reinterprets natural timber grain through fluid, graphic line work. Rendered in cool Payne's grey and soft charcoal tones against a muted ash-slate background, the vertical grain movement and organic wood-knot loops create a rhythmic, woodcut-inspired visual texture. What we particularly like is the balance between illustrative precision and organic movement, giving the surface a sophisticated architectural feel without looking rigid. Like all our wallpapers, this design is custom made-to-measure to fit your wall dimensions, printed on PVC-free paper with a subtle physical structure, and designed to be straightforward to hang.

In the room

The continuous vertical flow of this wallpaper makes it especially effective for adding subtle height and architectural character to a space. In a living room or behind a headboard in a bedroom, it works wonderfully across a full feature wall, where the repeating grain contours can unfold across an uninterrupted surface. Because the contrast remains soft and nuanced, it also sits comfortably across multiple walls in a home office, entryway, or study without overwhelming the room.

In rooms with generous daylight, the delicate tonal variation within the grey backdrop becomes more distinct. Under softer warm artificial lighting in the evening, the darker line work deepens slightly, creating a grounded and inviting atmosphere that feels cozy yet modern.

Styling it

We suggest leaning into clean lines and considered material contrasts to complement the graphic nature of the grain. Low-profile furniture with minimalist profiles lets the wallpaper serve as a visual backdrop without competing for attention.

To balance the cool, slate-toned grey palette, incorporate warm natural wood tones such as walnut or warm oak in side tables, credenzas, or shelving. Smooth matte ceramics, soft textured fabrics, or understated black metal accents create a refined interplay between the wallpaper's organic linework and contemporary interior elements.

Color combinations

The wallpaper features a restrained palette of cool Payne's grey, muted charcoal, and pale slate. When decorating the surrounding space, crisp off-white or soft alabaster paint on adjacent walls and trim provides a fresh, tailored frame for the design.

For a moodier, enveloping aesthetic, deep charcoal, navy, or smoky graphite accents echo the darker contour lines. If you prefer introducing subtle color, muted ochre, warm terracotta, or earthy olive tones offer an appealing natural warmth that pairs seamlessly with the cool grey foundation.
