Stripes Wallpapers & Wall Murals

Striped wallpapers have a long history in interior design, and it's not hard to see why. Parallel lines create a visual rhythm that can feel bold or understated depending on scale, spacing and colour, making them one of the more adaptable geometric patterns to work with. Whether you're considering a single feature wall or covering a full room, stripes offer a lot of flexibility without requiring a complete overhaul of everything else in the space.

How stripes can shape a room

One of the more practical qualities of striped wallpaper is the way it can influence how a room reads visually. Vertical stripes draw the eye upward, which can give rooms with lower ceilings a greater sense of height. Horizontal stripes tend to widen a space, making them a useful option for narrow hallways or compact bedrooms where the proportions feel a little tight. This doesn't mean every room needs stripes chosen for a structural purpose, but it's worth keeping in mind when you're deciding on orientation and scale.

Matching the stripe to your interior style

The range of interpretations within striped wallpaper is wide enough to suit quite different interiors. Classic pinstripes in soft grey, warm sand or off-white sit naturally in contemporary living rooms and home offices, pairing well with linen, natural oak and quieter furniture. Wider stripes in contrasting tones can anchor a dining room or bedroom as a feature wall, particularly where the rest of the room leans towards clean, unfussy lines.

For something a little less formal, abstract or hand-painted striped designs have a looser quality that works well in eclectic interiors or spaces with mid-century leanings. The slightly irregular quality of that kind of mural wallpaper tends to feel considered rather than purely graphic.

Colour choices that work with stripes

Neutral palettes keep things calm and easy to build around, especially if you're working with existing furniture you want to keep. Warm whites and soft greys are reliable starting points. For more character, deep navy, forest green or terracotta stripes can bring real presence to a bedroom or home office without tipping into something difficult to live with. In these cases, keeping the remaining walls plain and letting the furniture echo one of the stripe colours helps hold the room together.

Striped wall murals also work well in entryways and reception spaces, where the geometry creates a sense of structure and order from the outset. A tonal stripe in a slightly richer shade than the adjoining walls can be enough to give a hallway its own distinct character without needing to do much else.
