Wallpapers and Wall Murals for Cocktail Bars

Cocktail bars live and die by atmosphere. The moment a guest walks in, the lighting, the textures, and the walls all work together to set the mood before a single drink is poured. Wallpapers and wall murals are one of the most direct ways to anchor that atmosphere, giving the space a clear visual identity that feels considered rather than accidental.

Setting the mood with colour and pattern

For a classic or upscale cocktail bar, rich jewel tones and deep, moody backgrounds tend to create the kind of intimacy that works well with low lighting, candlelight, and the warm glow of a back-lit bottle display. Botanical designs, art deco patterns, or wallpapers with subtle metallic detailing can reinforce a sense of occasion. These styles sit naturally alongside dark timber, brass fixtures, and velvet seating, building a layered, enveloping interior that feels intentional from the moment guests arrive.

For a more contemporary or experimental setting, bold geometric patterns or abstract wall murals can bring energy and visual rhythm to the space. These work particularly well in venues that lean into modern design, with exposed concrete, industrial lighting, and minimal furniture. The contrast between a striking wallpaper and a pared-back interior can be genuinely effective at giving the bar its own character.

Placing wallpaper to best effect

A feature wall behind the bar is one of the most considered placements in a cocktail bar interior. It frames the bottle display, gives guests a natural focal point, and adds depth to the room without overwhelming the wider space. Running the same design across multiple walls creates a more immersive feel, which can work well in enclosed seating areas or intimate booths where guests spend longer periods of time.

Darker, more dramatic mural wallpapers can work well across full walls in these areas, making the space feel wrapped and considered. In contrast, lighter or more graphic designs can open up a room visually and suit venues with higher ceilings or more open layouts.

Adapting the design to the venue's identity

The strongest cocktail bar interiors tend to have a clear visual point of view, and the wallpaper often plays a central role in communicating that. A speakeasy-inspired bar might suit dark, textured wallpapers with period-influenced pattern work. A tropical or tiki venue could take a completely different direction, with lush, layered botanicals or vibrant colour. A minimalist cocktail lounge might use a single large-scale mural wallpaper as the only decorative gesture on an otherwise plain wall.

Because commercial spaces often have walls that don't follow standard proportions, having wallpapers made to measure for the specific dimensions of each wall is worth considering from the outset of the design process. It helps ensure the design reads as intended across every surface, including alcoves, recesses, and the angles that come with older or converted buildings.
