Wallpaper - Basking In The Light

Our Basking In The Light wallpaper, created by Kate Jarvik Birch, captures a quiet moment of everyday warmth with a painted aesthetic. The composition centres on a cat resting contentedly across a crisp beam of sunlight that cuts diagonally across a deep teal and slate floor. We love the dramatic contrast between the luminous golden-yellow light pool and the cool, shadowed floorboards. The painterly brushwork and expressive perspective give the wall mural an intimate, narrative presence. Produced made to measure on PVC-free paper with a subtle surface structure, this design brings an artful focal point to any interior.

In the room

Because of its strong diagonal composition and distinct focal point, we see this wall mural working particularly well on an uninterrupted feature wall where the full painted scene has space to unfold. In a living room, placing the design behind a low sofa or along a main wall keeps the cat motif and dramatic light beam clearly visible without being obscured by taller storage units.

In a bedroom, study, or cosy reading nook, the balance of deep slate tones and luminous amber creates an inviting backdrop that feels both tranquil and visually grounding. The diagonal angle of the sunlight naturally draws the eye across the room, making it an engaging choice for spaces where you want art with personality and warmth.

Styling it

To let the graphic contrast of the design remain the centre of attention, we would keep surrounding furniture relatively simple in form. Low-profile seating and clean architectural lines complement the perspective of the painted light beam without competing with it.

Warm timber pieces, such as teak or medium oak, echo the golden tones in the sunlight pool, while dark-painted or black accents tie into the deeper shadowed areas. For soft furnishings, choose textured, unpatterned fabrics in rich petrol blue, mustard, or soft charcoal to subtly extend the palette throughout the rest of the space.

Colour combinations

The palette in our wallpaper centres on rich teal-grey, deep charcoal shadow, warm golden yellow, and creamy amber highlights, complemented by the soft brown and tortoiseshell tones of the sleeping cat.

When choosing paint colours for adjoining walls and woodwork, muted slate blues and dark charcoals create a dramatic, cohesive feel that blends directly into the shadows of the design. If you prefer a lighter, more open balance, warm off-whites, soft creams, or a gentle ochre accent on neighbouring surfaces pick up on the warmth of the sunlit patch and keep the room bright.
