Wallpaper - Afternoon Nap

Our Afternoon Nap wallpaper, designed by Kate Jarvik Birch, captures a warm ginger-and-white tabby cat resting comfortably across a folded green mat. Rendered with a hand-painted look and expressive brushwork, the design pairs radiant shades of ginger, terracotta, ochre, and warm amber with calm olive greens and deep charcoal shadows. The strong diagonal composition and soft light make it a charming, characterful wall mural that instantly brings warmth and personality to an interior. Like all our wallpapers, this design is made-to-measure on PVC-free paper with a subtle physical structure.

In the room

Because of its painterly focal point and distinct diagonal flow, we see this wall mural working especially well on an accent wall in a living room, bedroom, reading nook, or study. Placing it behind a sofa, beside a low armchair, or along an uninterrupted wall in a guest room allows the illustrated subject to take centre stage without being broken up by tall furniture. In a study or hobby room, the rich colour contrast provides an inviting, personal backdrop that enriches the atmosphere while keeping the surrounding space feeling grounded and calm.

Styling it

When styling around this wallpaper, we suggest leaning into its warm, artisanal feel with relaxed furniture and understated textures. Mid-toned or warm natural woods, such as teak or warm oak, sit beautifully alongside the ginger and amber tones of the coat, while a comfortable upholstered chair in off-white, taupe, or soft olive complements the painted mat without competing for attention.

Keep surrounding decorative elements relatively clean and textured rather than heavily patterned. A simple wool rug, woven accents, and soft brass or bronze fittings echo the earthy palette while giving the mural plenty of visual space to breathe.

Colour combinations

The palette within our design balances vivid warmth with deep, grounding tones. The cat's coat introduces rich ginger orange, ochre, terracotta, and soft white highlights, set against shades of olive green, moss, and dark charcoal.

To build a harmonious palette around the room, we suggest working with warm neutral wall colours on adjacent surfaces, such as soft cream, pale oatmeal, or a quiet stone grey. If you prefer deeper contrast, bringing in accents of muted olive green or warm rust in your soft furnishings and cushions will tie directly into the artwork's tones.
