Wallpaper - Dreams Of The Savannah

Our Dreams Of The Savannah wallpaper, created by Kate Jarvik Birch, brings a warm, narrative presence into an interior. The design features a sleeping lion resting peacefully across an ornate, richly patterned rug with painterly swirls and circular motifs. Rendered with a hand-painted look and expressive brushstrokes, the composition balances deep terracotta reds, warm ochre, and rich brown tones against cool sky blue and turquoise accents. Like all our wallpapers, this mural is made to measure and printed on PVC-free paper with a subtle surface structure, making it straightforward to hang.

In the room

Because of the horizontal presence of the sleeping lion and the bold patterning of the decorative rug underneath, we see this wall mural working particularly well on an uninterrupted feature wall. It feels right at home in a living room behind a low sofa or credenza, in a study or library setting, or as a characterful backdrop in a bedroom.

The strong contrast between the cool blue backdrop and the warm, grounded tones of the lion and carpet gives the design substantial visual weight. Giving it a wall with enough breathing space lets the full illustrative scene unfold without feeling crowded by too many tall, competing pieces of furniture.

Styling it

When styling around this mural wallpaper, we suggest leaning into its warm, artisanal character while keeping larger furniture shapes relatively grounded. Mid-toned or dark woods, such as walnut or warm teak, naturally echo the earthy shades of the lion’s mane and deep shadow tones.

To balance the intricate painted pattern across the lower half of the wall, pair it with simple, tactile upholstery in unpatterned fabrics. A low-profile sofa or armchair in rust, warm sand, or deep charcoal allows the illustration to remain the primary focal point. For smaller accents, muted brass hardware or a touch of ceramic in soft terracotta or slate blue can subtly pull together the room's palette without overwhelming the space.

Colour combinations

The design centres around rich terracotta, burnt orange, golden ochre, and chocolate brown, offset by clear sky blue, slate, and touches of cream.

For adjacent walls and woodwork, warm off-whites, soft sand, or muted clay tones create a gentle, cohesive transition that lets the warmth of the wallpaper lead. If you prefer a bolder, more enveloping atmosphere, a deep slate blue or dusky petrol drawn directly from the upper background provides a sophisticated, moody contrast.
