Home office wallpaper: which wall should get the design?

Wallpaper behind the desk shows when you enter the room. Wallpaper in front of your chair is what you see while working. And the wall behind you becomes the background on video calls. Those could be three different walls. Choose which view you most want to change before choosing a design.

Start where you sit

Sit at your usual workspace and look up from the screen. Do you see a whole wall, a strip above the monitor or just a corner? That area is a good starting point if the wallpaper is mainly something you want to enjoy yourself.

An image with plenty to look at can work on a clear wall in front of or beside the desk. Historic Lands, Forest Green has trees and an opening in the woodland landscape. We would place it so you can see the opening from your chair, rather than putting it directly behind the monitor.

On a wall partly covered by work equipment, broad colour fields can be easier to work with. The design still has a presence when a screen or shelf hides part of the image.

Try the camera view before ordering

Open the camera in the program you normally use for meetings. Sit as you usually would and see how much of the wall shows behind you. A large product image tells you relatively little about a design that will appear only in a narrow area beside your shoulders.

Flourish the Flow is one of our most ordered abstract designs. The painted fields of green, dark blue and earthy colours make it an option when parts of the wall will show around a chair and shelves. Several areas can carry the image, so a single detail does not have to sit in the centre of the camera view.

Check the background with the lighting you use for calls. Look at where shelf edges, plants and lamps appear around your head too. Moving a lamp may be easier than giving up the wallpaper you like.

Compare the image with the whole wall's dimensions

Measure the wall you want to wallpaper and try the dimensions in the preview on the product page. Move the composition and compare it with the height of your desk, monitor and shelves.

For a woodland design, we would pay particular attention to where the lighter openings and distinct trees will sit. With an abstract image, you can choose which colour you want to see most above the workspace or behind the chair.

Finally, look from the doorway. A home office is often also a guest room or part of a living room. The wallpaper can give your workspace a clear place within that setting, even when the computer is off.

See the colours in place

A wallpaper sample is a small printed piece of wallpaper you can order to compare the colours with your room at home. Hold it where the wallpaper will go and compare it with the desktop and neighbouring walls. Check it during the day and with the desk lamp on.

The samples for these wallpaper murals are reduced images. Use them to choose colours and use the preview for the design's size and placement. If the camera background matters, look at the sample's colours through your usual meeting camera too. You will see how your own camera renders them.

Choose the wall in front of you if changing your own view matters most. Choose the wall behind you if the meeting background is your priority. If you want the wallpaper to make the biggest impression in the room as a whole, start with the view from the doorway and consider where the desk should go.
